Permanence:The garden was begun in1964 by Dr.W.J. Louw, a Botany lecturer at the Potchefstroomse Onderwys Kollege (Potchefstroom Teachers Training College). He developed the garden in order to provide the Botany department with plant material for practicals. Dr D.J. (Daan) Botha, a lecturer in Plant Systematics, in 1971 developed the garden further and it was accorded botanical garden status. In 1982 the garden was officially opened by Dr W.J.Louw.
Description:The garden is currently being renovated. The future plans of the garden are to increase the number of plant species and to determine which plants will do well in the extreme climate (by South African standards) of Potchefstroom. Theme gardens such as the new rockery and useful plants garden will also be added. Primarily indigenous plants are being planted but exceptions will be made with regard to exotic plants of botanical interest. Labeling and cataloguing of plants in the garden has begun.
