Permanence:The garden was created in 1955 under the guidance of Professor D. Yordanov and forms part of the teaching facilities of the University of Sofia.
Description:The Botanic Garden, Balchik (ten hectares) surrounds the small summer palace of the Romanian Queen Marie (the area was part of Romania between 1913 and 1940). The gardens are set on a steep hillside, and descend in six terraces to the sea and incorporate collections of tropical and subtropical exotic plants. It is famous for its collection of succulents and cacti, which includes around 600 species. The total number of plant species in all collections is around 3000. The garden is a national centre for rare and endangered species under the Washington Convention. It is a member of the World Council of the Botanic Gardens, member of the European Network for Training and Ecology in the Botanic Gardens, and has been awarded the “Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius” II Degree Order.
